PE/Sport

Intent

At St Agnes’ Primary School we believe that Physical fitness is an integral part of the development, well being and healthy lifestyle for our children. We strive to develop fundamental skills, knowledge and emotional resilience through a broad and varied curriculum. Through physical education, children are taught life skills and are allowed to express themselves and be creative which will have a positive impact for their future. They will also learn valuable life skills such as; cooperation with others , working as a team and understanding fairness. Teachers and coaches alike, plan and assess children to ensure progress for all children at St Agnes. Learning is differentiated for the individual needs of our children, particularly our SEND children.  Children will be giving plenty of opportunities to engage in sport festivals and competitions, promoting self-esteem and the opportunities to achieve and excel.

Implementation

At St Agnes’ Catholic Primary School, our PE curriculum is varied and inclusive to all children that attend our school and our long-term plans ensure that we meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. All pupils receive a minimum of two quality PE sessions per week, using our vast outdoor areas and school hall. All children access a weekly PE lesson with their class teach or our specially trained HLTA as well as a session with a coach from the NUFC Foundation who comes in every Thursday to teach a PE lesson to year 1-4 and Year 6. We also have a coach from the Little Kickers Foundation who delivers a PE session to our Reception class once a week. Our Year 5 children participate in swimming lessons once a week with specialist swimming coaches from Blaydon Swimming Baths as well as participating in cycling events such as ‘Bikeability’ where they learn how to become safe on the roads. During all of these lessons, children receive expert coaching to develop fundamental skills through a variety of activities and games suitable to their key stage.

Our PE curriculum is sequenced precisely to ensure progression of knowledge and skills throughout a child’s primary education, thus enabling children to build upon prior knowledge and experiences and apply these fluently, with confidence. Children also have the opportunity to further these skills during after school sports clubs, which we offer a wide range of in our school. We have two, teacher led sports clubs after school and three externally led sports clubs which cover a wide variety of sports and levels.

At St Agnes’ Catholic Primary School we endeavour to provide a broad range of activities based on children’s interests and new initiatives. In EYFS, children are taught how to move safely in a variety of different ways and they learn the importance of physical movement leading to a healthy lifestyle. We put a huge emphasis on resilience and effort which comes from our quality implementation of competence and confidence. Children who learn competence in PE from the very start will gain the confidence which in turn allows them to secure the resilience and determination that is crucial to compete and progress in PE.

At our school we understand the importance of competition within sport and physical activity and we aim to be as proactive as possible in offering our children the opportunities to participate in competitions and display their progress and capabilities. We are in multiple clusters that provide events which are inclusive and varied in their levels of competitiveness. We also seek to offer opportunities for the children to showcase their skills in events such as the Dance Festival where they perform a routine at the Sage in front of hundreds of people.

At St Agnes’, we also understand the importance of showing the children where hard-work and determination can lead, and so we try to invite professionals from a variety of sports to our school to share their own experiences with our children. In these events, the children can ask questions and get an insight into the lives of professional athletes. They can also see that sport can offer them some fantastic opportunities and this encourages participation and the willingness to put effort in.

Playtimes are an important part of our pupils being happy, healthy and ready to learn. We have well-staffed and equipped playgrounds; Multi-Use Games Areas; climbing apparatus; football pitches; basketball courts; access to equipment that will develop core skills such as skipping ropes, bean bags, hoops, race equipment and an Outdoor Area specifically for the EYFS children.

All children participate in an annual sports day event in which every key stage has their own variety of events and competitions. They are encouraged by the other year groups who cheer them on and at the end they receive a medal for participation and effort. We also recognise the importance of giving children the opportunity to use their skills to support others and, at our school, we have ‘Sports Leaders’ in Year 5 who run lunch time events where they teach the younger children games and coach them in a wide range of sports and movements.

Impact

P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. At St Agnes’, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Our aim is to motivate children to participate in a broad variety of sports in an engaging and fun environment where they can thrive and develop their physical, emotional and social attributes. Our high quality coaching and live feedback helps the children to progress in a comfortable, welcoming and inclusive environment.

What is the Sports Premium?

The government announced that it was to provide additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding which has been renewed for 2021-2022 –is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to primary school headteachers. The money must be used to improve the provision of P.E. and school sport.

Funding for 2021-2022 is £17,770

Evidencing the impact of the 2020-2021 budget can be found by clicking here.

Purpose of the Funding

The School Sport Premium money is ring fenced and can only be spent on Physical Education and sport provision in school. Schools will be expected to spend the funding on improving and enhancing their provision of physical education and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how to do this. Possible uses for the funding include: - hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE - new or additional change4life clubs - paying for professional development opportunities in PE/Sport - providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/Sport - running sport competitions, or increasing participation in school games - buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/Sport - providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs.

How will we spend our allocation at St Agnes'?

This funding will help us to enhance and sustain current and future progression. It is of the up most importance to us that all children benefit from this sports funding, regardless of sporting ability. As we have developed our action plan, we have included the seven priorities for appropriate use of the Sports Premium funding set out by the government. In addition to this, we have also made reference to the above advice received from Ofsted.  Please find attached our current Physical Education Action Plan. However, as things are ever changing, our action plan will be regularly tweaked and updated as we receive new information and confirmation of plans for the future.

NEW FOR 2017-2018 – SWIMMING DATA

There is a new condition requiring schools to publish how many pupils within their Year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations. Due to Covid, the academic year 2020-2021 does not have to publish these findings as they have not had sufficient time to access the swimming curriculum.

All our Year 5 children received free swimming lessons on a Thursday morning during the summer term (2021) at Dunston Leisure Centre. Come September 2021, all Year 5 children will swim weekly until the end of the school year on a Thursday morning and our Year 4 cohort will have swimming on a Tuesday morning.

Competitions

Please follow us on Twitter or visit our 'Sport Information' display board for the latest competition pictures and results.

Competition is also an important feature – it’s about personal competition as well as team competitions both within school (intra-school) and between schools (inter-school) particularly in KS2.

Partnership SLA (SSP)

Primary Schools can affiliate to a Core or Premium Service Level Agreement (SLA). The Premium SLA is designed to provide effective support to schools with delivery and accountability attached to the sport premium funding.

Buying into the Gateshead School Sports Partnership ensures schools will benefit from the high quality support, guidance, professional development, resources and programmes that we provide. Costs are categorised by school type and size.

St Agnes’ currently buys into the Premium Service Level Agreement.

Accountability

Schools must spend this additional funding on IMPROVING their provision of P.E. and sport, but each school has the freedom to choose how to do this.  Inspectors may review our school website, looking for evidence of our sporting provision as well as when they visit our school.  Schools must be able to account for their spending and to show how it has improved sporting provision.
